The Okavango and Victoria Falls September 2023

There can be few more beautiful places than the Okavango, the Victoria Falls, Zambia's mighty Zambezi river or the banks of the Chobe river in Botswana. I was lucky enough to have visited all  during my birthday month of September with daughter Tara and a small group of American friends. The memories and images will never die. We were first whisked from Maun by helicopter to the the rustic and eco-friendly Cha Cha Metsi Lodge in the Okavango - a birding mecca. The lodge sits on the lip of a lagoon where elephants come to drink, sought-after birds paddle and forage, and the sunsets are breathtaking.

After four memorable nights, thrilling game drives, serene mokoro trips, bush picnics, fantastic birds and Okavango animal specials such as leche antelopes and the elusive wattled crane, we choppered off to the Vic Falls. We stayed at the superb Victoria Falls Safari Lodge Club and watched a daily feeding of endangered vultures.

Some of our group even braved the white-water rafting in the gorge.

The water wonderlands of Southern Africa

After our stay at the Falls we were taken on a thrilling helicopter ride not only over the falls, but also through the gorge - exhilarating is an understatement.

Another highlight was a guided walk along the falls under the benevolent gaze of Dr Livingstone.
