The Okavango Delta − one of my favourite places on earth

It's late November and I'm sitting in a mokoro (a traditional canoe) being poled silently by my local guide through one of the world's loveliest areas − the Okavango Delta. One of the world's only inland deltas, the Okavango is formed by the Okavango River as it floods into north west Botswana from Angola, and then fans out into a myriad of waterways, both tiny and huge.

The Okavango Delta from the air

A purple heron flies off, jacanas are lily-trotting over the crystal-clear water, and a small herd of breeding elephants is feeding close by. Many visitors come to the Okavango for the game (0ver 75 species of larger mammals) and nearly 600 bird species, but they will leave, not only with wonderful sightings, but also with the indelible memory of perfect peace and tranquillity.

I stayed at Wilderness Safaris Xigera Camp (pronounced Kidg -er a) in Moremi Game Reserve, and the enchanting Little Tubu Tree camp in the Jao concession. (Google them to see just how wonderful they are).

My gorgeous 'tent' at Little Tubu

But I'll let some of my pictures tell the story...

A leopard feasts on a baby warthog

Going fishing for bream and tiger fish...

Water lilies everywhere...

A lioness hunting...

Elephants splash by...

The end of another perfect Okavango day...
