Madikwe Magic

Surveying the territory

The last weekend in May, my family and I and some friends drove to Madikwe Game Reserve in North West Province - one of South Africa's great game rehabilitation stories. Twenty-five years ago it was a barren wasteland of deserted farms, overgrown bush and rusting cattle fences. Thanks to Operation Genesis, when 8 000 heads of game from 27 different species were relocated to the 75 000 square km malaria-free area, today Madikwe is one of our most popular safari destinations.

Wild dogs on an impala kill

...one of those unforgettable game drives where everything seems to happen...

There are over 30 private lodges (no day visitors) and Jaci's Safari Lodge, where we stayed, with 12 children ranging from one year-old to teens, is the ideal family lodge.

The 4 brothers stop for a drink before they continue the hunt

...and the hunt then continues
