Travel Talk on Radio 702/Cape Talk

Every Sunday morning between 8.35 and 8.50 I’ll be giving lots of sound advice, all based on personal experience, good tips and the pros and cons of destinations both local and international, on Radio 702/Cape Talk Sunday Breakfast Show hosted by Kgomotso Matsunyane.
This week, on Sunday 20th, January, I talked about the Kruger National Park, one of the world’s greatest game parks.

I’ve visited many of the world’s great game parks from the tiger reserves of India and Nepal, to the National Parks of America, and from the jungles of the Amazon to Serengeti and the Masai Mara, but Kruger still remains my favourite. Why?

There is nothing quite like driving along in your own vehicle, alone, or with family and friends, and spotting your ‘own’ elephant, lion or warthog.

Because there is game galore all year round, because there is all sorts of accommodation to suit all pockets, ranging from luxury family houses to 2-person rondavels and camping sites, plus you can go on guided game drives, game walks, 4x4 trails, mountain biking trails, and even sleep out in a bird hide overnight.

Time for a twiggy snack...

And there is nothing quite like driving along in your own vehicle, alone, or with family and friends, and spotting your ‘own’ elephant, lion or warthog.
The big camps are very child-friendly, and be sure to book a guided Sunset Drive. Why the Sunset Drive?
Because you encounter game and birds having their sundowners at water holes, plus you get the thrill of a night drive with spotlights picking out the nocturnal specials such as leopards, genets, porcupines, bush babies and many more.
Last year, just after sunset, our vehicle encountered a pride of 24 lions which had just killed 2 buffalo – and we were the only vehicle at the site.
Pros: affordable, game and birds galore, self-drives, loads of different kinds of accommodation, accessible
Cons: malaria (take malaria medication), book well in advance – up to 11 months if you want accommodation during the school holidays.
KATE SPECIAL TIP
Book by phone rather than on line. www.sanparks.org will give you all contact details plus more detailed information on camps, trails and lots more.

And please email me if you would like information about destinations or any travel queries on kate@kateturkington.com

Expect everything and anything...

...and be careful who you meet.
